demonstrated for all these proteins. However, the assignment of 9 distinct allergen numbers to members of the same protein family is quite unusual. Methods: Currently, the IUIS allergen database contains 12 allergen and isoallergen sequences from C. thummi thummi. The Uniprot database has demerged entry P02225, listed in the database for Chi t 7, into 7 entries, 5 from C. thummi thummi and 2 from C. thummi piger that are identical to 2 of the sequences from C. thummi thummi. Consequently, the 16 unique amino acid sequences of the mature C. thummi allergens were aligned using ClustalX2, a neighbor-joining tree was generated from the alignment and a percent sequence identity matrix was built to evaluate appropriate nomenclature. Results: Pairwise sequence alignments showed that sequences belonging to allergens Chi t 5, 6, 7 and 8 possess sequence identities to Chi t 3 of between 51 and 63%. Chi t 1, 2, 4, and 9 diverge to a greater extent from Chi t 3 (,50% identical) and from each other. Phylogenetic tree analysis suggests the clustering of Chi t 3, 6, 7, and 8, while Chi t 1, 2, 4, 5, and 9 form separate clades. Conclusions: Based on these analyses, the IUIS Allergen Nomenclature SubCommittee renames Chi t 5, 6, 7 and 8 isoallergens of Chi t 3, even though their sequence identities to Chi t 3 are below the 67% threshold previously defined for isoallergens. The remaining hemoglobins, previously designated Chi t 1, 2, 4 and 9 will retain their previous names.

Diagnostic value of birch recombinant allergens (rBet v 1, profilin rBet v 2) in children with pollen-related food allergy.

PURPOSE Pollen-related food allergy to fresh fruits and vegetables is a well-known clinical phenomenon. Bet v 1, the major birch pollen allergen, has been cloned and shows homologies to various food allergens (e.g. hazelnut, apple, celery, tomato). Allergy to profilin Bet v 2 was also described in 10-15% of patients sensitized to birch pollen. Objective of our work was to assess the diagnostic ...

Evaluation of birch pollen sensitization profile in allergic rhinoconjunctivitis patients from Bucharest region using component-resolved diagnosis

Background In the Romanian flora, several species of the Betula genus are present, especially European white birch (B. pendula, syn. B. verrucosa) and downy birch (B. pubescens, syn. B. alba). Rare species are B. nana and B. humilis. In Southern Romania, the sensitization to Betulaceae pollen in patients with allergic rhinitis is less frequent than that to Poaceae pollen. The flowering season o...

Identification of Proteases and Protease Inhibitors in Allergenic and Non-Allergenic Pollen

Pollen is one of the most common causes of allergy worldwide, making the study of their molecular composition crucial for the advancement of allergy research. Despite substantial efforts in this field, it is not yet clear why some plant pollens strongly provoke allergies while others do not. However, proteases and protease inhibitors from allergen sources are known to play an important role in ...

Occupational rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma caused by chicory and oral allergy syndrome associated with bet v 1-related protein.

We report the case of a patient working in a factory producing inulin from chicory who developed rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma to the dust of dry chicory roots and oral allergy syndrome to raw fruits and vegetables. Nonspecific bronchial hyperresponsiveness was diagnosed. A provocation test with dry chicory induced acute rhinoconjunctivitis and an immediate asthmatic response with no further c...

Facial rash and palmoplantar pruritus in an infant after first contact with kaki.

Kaki, also known as Sharon fruit or persimmon, is the edible fruit of the persimmon tree (Diospyros kaki), which belongs to the Ebenaceae family. Although kaki has been a very popular food in Japan for centuries, no allergies to this fruit have been previously reported in this country. A 13-month-old male infant was brought to the outpatient clinic at Kumamoto University Hospital in Kumamoto, J...
